How Do I Filter by user_id Identifier in Segment Engage Builder?

Question

How can I build a Segment audience that filters users based on the user_id identifier, rather than the userId trait, in the Segment Audience Builder?

Product

Segment

Environment

Segment Console

Answer

The Segment Audience Builder currently does not support filtering directly on the user_id identifier, nor on any other high-level fields. Filtering is only available for traits and event properties. To filter audiences by user_id, copy the user_id identifier into a trait (for example, user_id_trait) via your identify calls, and then filter on that trait in the audience builder. Alternatively, use a SQL trait or Reverse ETL source to derive user_id as a trait for filtering.

Additional Information

There are plans to add identifier-based filtering to the Segment Audience Builder, but no confirmed timeline for this feature is available.
