Multiple Delivery Alerts Triggered for Same Failed Event in Segment

Issue

Segment delivery alerts are sending multiple notifications for the same failed event when the successful delivery rate drops below a set threshold (e.g., 100%) within a 24-hour window. Users expect to receive only one alert per failed event but instead receive repeated alerts as long as the event remains within the alerting window.

Environment

Cause

Segment’s alerting system evaluates the delivery rate at regular intervals over a rolling 24-hour window. If the delivery rate remains below the configured threshold due to a failed event, the system continues to trigger alerts at each interval until the event ages out of the window or the delivery rate recovers.

Resolution

To reduce the number of alerts, consider lowering the alert threshold (for example, from 100% to 99%). Alerts will stop automatically once the failed event is older than 24 hours or the delivery rate returns above the threshold.
