Objective
This article explains how to locate and interpret the messageId value from Segment events within your Snowflake data warehouse. If you are unable to find messageId in your Snowflake tables after syncing Segment events, this guide will clarify how Segment standardizes this property and where to find it.
Keywords: Segment, Snowflake, messageId, sync, warehouse, event properties.
Product
Segment Console
Environment
Segment Console
User Account Permission/Role(s) Required
- Segment workspace access with permissions to view source and warehouse settings
- Snowflake access with permission to query event tables
Procedure
1. Understand Property Mapping:
Segment does not store messageId as a custom property in Snowflake. Instead, it maps messageId to the standard column id in all event tables (such as tracks, identifies, or custom event tables).
2. Query the Event Table:
- In your Snowflake console, identify the relevant schema and table (e.g., sondermind_monolith_be_production.tracks).
- Run a query such as:
SELECT id AS message_id, timestamp, event
FROM <your_schema>.<your_table>
LIMIT 10;
- The Id column in the result will contain the original messageId from your Segment event payload.
3. Deduplication Note:
Segment uses the id column (which holds the messageId) for deduplication before merging new rows into Snowflake.
Additional Information
- The
messageIdwill not appear in the Properties list in the Selective Sync for warehouse destinations, as it is standardized asId. - For more details on Segment’s warehouse schema and property mapping, refer to Segment documentation on Warehouse Schema Reference
- If you have trouble finding your events or need help with specific queries, contact your Segment workspace administrator or Twilio Support.
