Issue
You may notice a discrepancy between the active audience count on the Engage Audience Overview or List pages and the size shown in the Audience Preview tool.

Environment
Segment Console
Cause
This is expected platform behavior caused by how Segment processes live previews versus active counts:
- The Preview is a Live Query: This tool provides the most accurate, real-time count by running an on-demand query against your database to identify exactly who qualifies at that moment.
- Batch Computation Schedules: Batch audiences update on a scheduled cadence (typically every 1–8 hours). The live preview will display newly qualified users instantly, while the active audience count will not update until the next scheduled computation.
- Real-time Latency: While real-time audience counts update quickly, minor delays (e.g., a difference of 20 users out of thousands) are normal.
- UI Page Update Cadence: The individual Audience Overview page updates more frequently than the aggregate Engage > Audiences list, which can cause temporary visual mismatches when navigating between the two.
Resolution
To verify whether your audience is computing correctly or simply experiencing a temporary UI sync delay, try these troubleshooting steps:
1. Identify the Audience Type: Navigate to Engage > Audiences and select your audience. Look for a lightning bolt icon next to "Realtime Enabled" to confirm if it is a real-time or scheduled batch audience.
2. Run an Exclusion Preview Test:
- Open your audience and navigate to the Builder tab.
- Leave all original conditions exactly as they are.
- Add an additional criteria row using an AND NOT operator: AND NOT who are part of [This Same Audience].
- Click Preview. Because you are searching for users who meet the criteria but are not yet in the audience, this preview count should be zero or very close to it. If the preview is zero, your audience is up-to-date and functioning perfectly.
3. Check for Sync Delays:
- For batch audiences: If the exclusion test shows a positive number, check the timestamp of your last successful computation. These users will be added automatically on the next scheduled run.
- For real-time audiences: If newly created, allow up to 24 hours for the initial historical backfill to complete and transition the audience to a Live status.
Additional Information
- Live database queries are resource-heavy. To keep the Segment Console running smoothly, primary dashboards display counts from periodic snapshots (updated every few hours) rather than running live queries on every page load.
- Downloadable CSV lists represent a static snapshot from the most recent computation run and will not reflect real-time preview data. For newly created real-time audiences, CSV generation is temporarily disabled for the first 12 hours while backend processing completes.
