Resolving Profiles Displaying Multiple user_id Values Despite Single user_id Limit Setting

Issue

In Segment Unify, some profiles display multiple user_ids even though the Unify setting is configured to allow only one user_id per profile. Customers may notice this when reviewing profiles in the Segment Console, and it can affect identity resolution and downstream workflows.

Product

Segment

Environment

Cause

This issue is caused by a timing-related race condition. If two user_id updates are ingested within seconds of each other, both can be added to a profile before the system enforces the single user_id limit. This can result in profiles with more than one user_id, even when the Unify configuration is set to restrict to one.

Resolution

  1. Use the Editable Profiles feature in Segment to manually correct the affected profiles.
  2. Remove any extra user_ids so that only one remains per profile, in accordance with your Unify settings.
  3. Save the changes to ensure the profile reflects the correct user_id association.

If you need guidance on using Editable Profiles, refer to Segment’s documentation or reach out to support for step-by-step instructions.

Additional Information

  • This issue does not result from misconfiguration, duplicate identifiers, caching, or known formatting bugs.
  • Engineering has confirmed the root cause and recommends Editable Profiles as the most effective remediation.
  • To prevent recurrence, monitor for rapid or bulk updates to user_id fields and coordinate with your engineering team to avoid simultaneous writes.
