Can You Use Custom Domains for Server-Side and Mobile Sources?

Question

Can Segment Custom Domain be used for server-side and mobile sources, and what are the limitations compared to JavaScript sources?

Product

Segment

Environment

Segment Console

Answer

Segment Custom Domain is optimized for JavaScript sources. While it can be configured for other source types, it does not preserve the original client IP address. For server-side and mobile sources, this may impact analytics accuracy, geolocation, fraud prevention, and compliance workflows that rely on real client IPs. For these sources, it is recommended to use api.segment.io directly.

Additional Information

For JavaScript sources, Custom Domain helps bypass browser tracking prevention by allowing requests to your own domain. However, IP and geolocation data from JavaScript sources may still be obfuscated by browser settings.
