User Not Appearing in Segment Audience Despite Matching Criteria

Issue

A user is not included in a Segment Engage audience, even though their event data appears to fulfill the audience requirements. This can occur with any event type, such as "Order Completed," when the user expects automatic audience inclusion.

Cause

Audience membership requires an exact match between event property values and audience rule conditions. If the event property values do not precisely match the values specified in the audience rule, or if the event falls outside the defined timeframe, the user will not be included. Partial matches or similar actions are not sufficient.

Resolution

  • Review the audience rule configuration and confirm all property values exactly match those in the event data.
  • Ensure the event occurred within the timeframe specified in the audience rule.
  • If multiple values are valid, update the audience rule to include all expected values or use an "OR" condition.
  • After updating the audience rule, verify users are included automatically.

Additional Information

Segment audience logic is literal and requires explicit configuration for all valid event property values. Regularly review event payloads and audience rules to ensure alignment.
