How Do You Configure Multiple Same-Type Activations for an Audience Without Overwriting Destinations?

Question

How can I add multiple activations of the same type (e.g., Facebook Custom Audiences or DV360) to a single Segment Engage audience without overwriting or duplicating them? Why do my activations overwrite each other, and how can I resolve this?

Answer

Segment Engage is designed to allow multiple activations of the same type within a single audience. However, overwriting or duplication can occur if two activations of the same action type are set up to use the same destination instance (for example, two Facebook Custom Audience activations targeting the same Facebook Ad Account).

This happens because both activations may fire for the same audience event without unique trigger criteria or filters, sending conflicting payloads to the same destination. As a result, one sync may overwrite or drop the other.

To resolve this:

  • Recommended: Set up a separate destination instance for each activation. For example, if you need to sync to two different Facebook Ad Accounts, create two Facebook Custom Audiences destination instances in Segment one for each account. Then, attach each activation to its own instance. This keeps the sync pipelines isolated and prevents collisions.
  • Alternatively: If you must use a single destination instance, make sure each activation has unique trigger criteria or configuration (such as different filters or target list IDs). This ensures that both activations don’t fire on the same event with identical parameters.

If you need step-by-step guidance on setting up separate destination instances or configuring unique triggers, refer to Segment’s documentation or reach out to support for assistance.
