Issue
When sending audiences to a Reddit destination in Segment, you may find that the sync fails after a few weeks, requiring you to manually reauthorize the destination to resume sending. During these sync failures, you may observe the following error message: unable to find custom audience ca.XXXXXXXXX — ensure your Ad Account ID is configured correctly
Product
Twilio Segment
Cause
While this behavior is frequently suspected to be a recurring (approximately 4-week) authentication token expiration issue, backend investigations reveal that the root cause is a destination-side audience invalidation.
When an audience is first connected to the destination, Segment triggers a "create audience" request to Reddit, which returns an external audience ID. From that point on, Segment only transmits delta updates using that stored ID. The error unable to find custom audience indicates that Reddit's platform no longer recognizes or maintains that specific audience ID (meaning the audience was either removed, expired, or became invalid on Reddit's end, rather than on Segment's). Even if a resync is attempted, the audience remains marked as invalid in your Reddit Ads Manager.
Resolution
- Log in to your Reddit Ads Manager and verify the status of the custom audience associated with your Segment sync.
- Contact Reddit Support to investigate why the custom audience became invalid or was removed on their end, and whether their token/authorization expiry behavior has recently changed.
- Once Reddit verifies or recreates the target audience, disconnect and re-link the audience in the Segment Console to force Segment to generate a fresh, valid external audience ID.
