Fix TikTok External Audience Creation Error in Segment

Issue

When attempting to create an external audience for a TikTok destination in your Segment space, the creation fails with an INTERNAL_SERVER_ERROR code and the following error message:

Failed to create the external audience: Invalid response from create audience request

Product

Segment

Environment

Segment Console

Cause

This issue occurs when the user or connected account authorizing the TikTok destination lacks sufficient advertising permissions or does not have the required Operator access type assigned in TikTok Business Manager.

Resolution

To resolve this error and create external audiences successfully, ensure the authorizing TikTok user account has elevated permissions:

  1. Log in to your TikTok Business Center or TikTok Ads Manager account.
  2. Confirm that the connected account authorized in Segment is assigned the correct Advertising ID and has its Access Type set to Operator.
  3. Re-authorize the TikTok destination within your Segment workspace using the user account with updated permissions.
  4. Retry creating the external audience for the TikTok destination.
