What happens if I exceed my MTU or API limits on my Segment workspace?

Question

My Segment workspace has exceeded its allotted MTUs or API call limit. Will Segment stop processing events, or will data continue flowing to my destinations?

Environment

Answer

If you exceed your plan's included Monthly Tracked Users (MTUs) or allotted API calls, data will continue to be ingested by Segment and delivered to your configured downstream destinations. Exceeding these limits does not automatically stop event processing for paid plans.

What happens next depends on your plan:

  • Monthly Team plans: Data continues to flow, and any applicable overage charges are applied. You can review current usage and overage pricing under Usage & Billing on the Twilio pricing page.
  • Business (invoiced) plans: Data continues to flow, and any applicable overage charges are determined by your contract. If you have questions about your overage pricing, refer to your contract or contact your Account Executive.
  • Free plans: If your workspace exceeds the 1,000 MTU limit twice within a 6-month period, Segment locks the workspace and stops both receiving new data and sending data to downstream destinations until the account is upgraded or otherwise resolved. For more information about Free plan usage limits and what happens when they are exceeded, see: What happens when I exceed the Free plan limit?
