Issue
If the primary owner of your Segment workspace has left your company or is otherwise unavailable, you may find yourself unable to add new workspace members, or modify key workspace administrative settings because the administrative account is locked or orphaned.
Product
Twilio Segment
Environment
Segment Console
Cause
The designated Workspace Owner is out of the office, has changed roles, or is no longer with the organization. Because standard user permissions in Segment do not allow non-owners to invite certain members or transfer workspace ownership, the workspace becomes administratively inaccessible if the owner is unavailable.
Resolution
For security and compliance reasons, Segment Support cannot directly add users or modify ownership roles within a workspace from the backend. To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:
Option 1: Recover the Account via Your Internal IT Department (Recommended)
- Contact your company's internal Information Technology (IT) or email administration team.
- Request temporary access to, or an email forward for, the departed or absent owner's email inbox.
- Go to the Segment login page and initiate a password reset for that owner's email address.
- Access the password reset link from the recovered inbox to log into the Segment Console.
- Once logged in, navigate to your workspace settings to invite new users and assign a new Workspace Owner.
Option 2: Submit a Legal Authorization Request (Last Resort)
- Contact Segment Support and state that you need to initiate the legal verification route to reclaim an orphaned workspace.
- Prepare a formal, signed letter from an authorized representative of your company who possesses the legal capacity to sign contracts on behalf of your organization.
- Ensure the document explicitly details why the workspace is currently orphaned and states the specific full name and email address of the person who should be granted administrative access.
- Submit this letter to Segment Support. Support will route the documentation to the Legal department for internal review.
Additional Information
- To prevent future workspace administrative lockouts, it is highly recommended to designate more than one trusted team member with administrative privileges.
- If your billing plan allows, consider using an internal shared email distribution list (for example,
segment-admin@yourcompany.com) as the primary workspace owner account instead of an individual person's inbox.
