How To Generate a New Write Key for Your Segment Source

Objective

This article helps you generate a new API write key for a Segment source while ensuring your data collection continues without interruption during a system transition or security rotation.

Product

Twilio Segment

Environment

Segment Console

User Account Permission/Role(s) Required

Source Admin permissions or Workspace Owner role

Procedure

  1. Log into your Segment workspace.

  2. Navigate to the left-hand menu and click Connections, then select Sources.

  3. Locate and click on the specific source that requires a new write key.

  4. Click on the Settings tab.

  5. Go to the API Keys section listed within the settings menu.

  6. Click the button labeled Generate New Key to create your secondary active write key.

Additional Information

When you generate a new write key, your original write key remains completely active and valid. It will continue to collect and track data normally until you choose to manually delete it from your source settings. Keeping both the old and new write keys active simultaneously allows them to safely work in parallel without any issues, giving you time to update your implementation codebase seamlessly.
