Fix Google Ads Conversions Customer ID Format Errors

Issue

When configuring the Google Ads Conversions destination in Segment (including actions like Customer Match User List), users may encounter errors such as Bad Request: Error loading options from Google Ads Conversions or Customer ID is required. These errors often occur due to incorrect formatting of the Customer ID and Login Customer ID fields.

Cause

The Customer ID and Login Customer ID fields must be entered in the required format:

XXX-XXX-XXXX (three groups of digits separated by hyphens)

If the IDs are entered without hyphens or in any other format, Segment cannot connect properly to the Google Ads API, resulting in dropdown errors or failed list creation.

 

Resolution

  1. Verify the Customer ID and Login Customer ID in your Google Ads dashboard.
  2. Enter both IDs in the Segment destination settings using the format:
    • Example: 726-273-3929
    • Example: 187-555-6867
  3. Save your settings and retry the mapping or action.

 

Additional Information 

  • If you continue to see errors after correcting the format, ensure you have admin access to both the MCC and child accounts.
  • For dynamic dropdown errors, manually enter the List ID and map all required fields.
  • If the issue persists, capture a screen recording with browser developer tools open and share it with support for further investigation.
