Issue
When attempting to log into your Segment account, you may be unable to complete the login process because your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) codes are not working or are marked as invalid.
Product
Twilio Segment
Environment
Segment Console
Cause
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) codes are highly time-sensitive. If the device generating the codes (such as your mobile phone) is not synchronized with global time, the codes will be rejected as invalid. Alternatively, recovery codes may be required if your primary authenticator application is unavailable.
Resolution
Check Device Clock Synchronization
- On your phone, go to Settings > Date & Time.
- Verify that Set Automatically is enabled.
- Toggle this setting off and back on to force-resynchronize your device's internal clock with global time.
Use Recovery Codes
- Locate the emergency recovery codes provided to you when MFA was first enabled on your Segment account.
- Use one of these backup codes to log in.
Identify MFA Method
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, confirm which MFA method is configured on your account to assist with further recovery:
- Authenticator App (such as Google Authenticator or Authy)
- SMS codes
Escalation
If you are still unable to log in after completing these steps, please contact Segment Support for formal account recovery assistance.
Additional Information
- MFA codes are highly sensitive to even minor time discrepancies.
- Emergency recovery codes are essential for account recovery and should always be stored in a secure location in case your authenticator app is lost or unavailable.
