How to Route a Twilio Phone Number to AU1 or IE1 Region

Objective

By default, Twilio processes all services through the US1 region. This article explains how to re-route a purchased Twilio phone number to either Australia (AU1) or Ireland (IE1) region.

Note: For organizations operating in multiple regions, this means that webhook callbacks are signed with US1 credentials and originate from US servers. Which can cause signature validation failures when the receiving service expects requests from a different region.

To understand what services are available or regional routing see: Regional product availability.

User Account Permission/Role(s) Required

  • Account Owner
  • Administrator
  • Developer with access to Phone Number configuration in the Twilio Console

Procedure

Routing a number to Regions can only be done after the number is purchased. Phone numbers can only be purchased through the US1 region, regardless of where you intend to route them.

See How to Search for and Buy a Twilio Phone Number From Console for steps to locate and buy a number.

NOTE: It is recommended to wait up to 1 minute between a phone number purchase and route change from  US1 to another region. This allows the number data to replicate in regional resources. Performing a re-route too quickly will result in a Number Invalid error.

Re-route the Number to the Target Region

  1. In the Twilio Console, navigate to Phone Numbers → Manage → Active Numbers
  2. Click on the phone number you want to re-route.
  3. In the Routing section, click Go to other configurations
  4. Select the target region. For example, Ireland (IE1)
  5. Click Re-route.
  6. Configure your Voice URL / webhook in the Voice Configuration section.
  7. Save the changes.

After re-routing, all inbound traffic to this number will be processed by the selected region.

Test the Configuration

  1. Make a test call to the re-routed phone number.
  2. Check your webhook server logs and confirm that the request is originating from the desired region region. The following is an example of the test results you may receive:
Host:
Location: Dublin, Ireland
Date: 04/02/2026
Size: 853 bytes
Time: 0.002 sec
ID:
