How long does it take to port a US number to Twilio?

Porting a number to Twilio involves several steps and coordination between carriers, which can affect the timeline. Here's a breakdown of the typical timeframes:

  1. Port in API for US numbers: Numbers can port in 3 days and you can select the desired port-in date and activation time. The high-level steps for creating a port in request via API are:
    • Check the portability for all phone numbers in the request.
    • Upload a Utility Bill(s) showing proof of ownership for phone numbers to be ported.
    • Create a new port in request for the phone numbers.
    • A Letter of Authorization (LOA) will be created with all portable numbers from the port in request and it will be sent to the authorized representative's email (added in the API) for signature.
    • The authorized representative of the number signs the LOA.
    • Twilio submits the request to the losing carrier.
    • Any port rejections are handled based on responses from the losing carrier.
    • Twilio confirms the date for the port with the losing carrier.
    • Twilio and the losing carrier complete the number port on the agreed date, at which point the phone numbers will be added to your account's inventory.
  1. US Porting:
    • In the US, porting typically lasts from 5 to 15 days, but it can take up to 4 weeks or longer because of carrier rejections.
    • For local US numbers, an approved A2P 10DLC campaign and brand registration is required to enable messaging on your ported number. This setup should be done as soon as you submit your port request.
  1. Bulk Ports: Due to their complexity, bulk ports typically take between six to eight weeks to complete.
  1. Rejections: If a rejection occurs during the porting process, it may add an additional two to four weeks from the time the rejection is resolved.
  1. SMS Routing: For US Local and Tollfree numbers, SMS routing typically 2-3 business days post the number porting into our network.

Overall, the porting process requires careful coordination and preparation to ensure a smooth transition without service interruptions.
