Can I send and receive SMS messages using a ported number?

Yes, you can send and receive SMS messages using a number that you port to Twilio. Here are some details to consider:

  • Local Numbers: For local numbers, the ability to send and receive SMS messages typically takes up to 3 business days after the porting date to be activated. As that’s the timeframe all carriers have to update their routing records. Until this is completed by all parties involved, SMS will not be enabled.
  • US Toll-Free Numbers: For US toll-free numbers, SMS routing to Twilio usually  takes an extra 2-3 business days to activate because all carriers must update their routing records During this period, SMS messages will continue to route through the existing provider.

If you encounter any issues with sending or receiving SMS messages outside of these timeframes, please reach out to Twilio support for assistance.
