Question
Can I use my existing Twilio WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) and sender to create, join, or manage native WhatsApp groups? Does having an Official Business Account (OBA) status enable this feature?

Answer
Currently, Twilio does not provide access to Meta’s native WhatsApp Groups API for any sender or WABA. Group management, creation, and participation via the native Meta API are not supported through Twilio’s platform, and there is no special approval process to enable it.
Please note the following limitations regarding native WhatsApp groups:
- Participation: Twilio WhatsApp senders cannot join, interact with, or act as administrators for native WhatsApp groups created within the standard consumer WhatsApp app.
- Endpoints: Twilio does not expose API endpoints for native group creation, participant management, or group invitations.
- Message History & Webhooks: You cannot receive inbound messages, webhooks, or historical chat data from native WhatsApp groups.
- Official Business Account (OBA): Having an OBA verified by Meta does not bypass this limitation or grant native group API access.
Supported Alternative: Twilio Conversations If you need to facilitate group messaging, you can use the Twilio Conversations API to build multiparty messaging experiences using your WhatsApp senders.
Twilio Conversations is a distinct product and does not integrate with native WhatsApp groups. All group logic, participant management, and messaging must be handled entirely within Twilio Conversations. Native WhatsApp group participant limits do not apply; instead, refer to the Conversations API limits.
