How do I review message delivery and error trends?

Objective

This article walks you through the Delivery and Errors view in Messaging Insights, where you can see how many messages you sent and received, how they ended up, and which error codes accounted for the failures.

Product

Programmable Messaging

Environment

Twilio Console

Procedure

  1. In the Twilio Console, select Communications in the left sidebar.
  2. Select Messaging, then Insights.
  3. Select the Delivery and Errors tab.
  4. At the top, review the Delivery performance flow diagram. Use the Outgoing and Incoming buttons on the card to switch direction.
  5. Below the diagram, read the summary cards. For outgoing traffic these are Total Messages, Sent and Delivered; for incoming traffic they are Total Messages, SMS / MMS, WhatsApp and RCS. Hover a card title for a definition of the metric.
  6. Select View Logs on any summary card to open the matching list of messages.
  7. Scroll to the three chart sections, each with an Outgoing Messages and an Incoming Messages card:
  8. Total Messages — volume split into messages with an OK status and messages with an error.
  9. Delivery Status — volume by final delivery status.
  10. Error Codes — volume by error code.
  11. Each chart card shows its total in the card description, for example "Total Messages: 1,000". Use the chart types control on a card to switch between a line, column or pie presentation.

Additional Information

  • Outgoing Total Messages counts messages with a status of Sent, Delivered, Undelivered, Delivery Unknown or Failed. Incoming Total Messages counts messages with a Failed or Received status.
  • Delivered is shown as a rate rather than a count, and is the share of sent messages that Twilio has received delivery confirmation for.
  • All cards respond to the date range and the other filters at the top of the page. See "How do I change the date range for Messaging Insights?" and "How do I filter Messaging Insights by error code, country or sender?".
  • When there is no traffic matching your filters, a card shows No Results Found. If the data behind a card cannot be loaded, the card shows Something went wrong while the other cards continue to render.
  • Charts can be downloaded — see the download action on each chart card.
  • To split a chart by carrier, country, number, subaccount or Messaging Service, see "How do I break down Messaging Insights charts by carrier, country or sender?".
