How do I receive a test SMS on my Twilio trial number?

Objective

This article shows you how to text your Twilio trial phone number from your own phone and get an automatic reply, so you can see how Twilio handles inbound SMS before you build your own reply logic.

Product

Programmable Messaging

Environment

Twilio Console

Procedure

  1. In the Twilio Console, select Home in the left sidebar.
  2. Select the Messaging product tab on your account home.
  3. Select Try out SMS.
  4. Select the Receive an SMS tab. The Inbound message settings appear.
  5. Leave Auto-reply set to Standard. This uses a Twilio hosted reply, so you do not have to build anything to get a response.
  6. Get your trial number onto your phone in either of these ways:
  7. Scan the QR code shown in the panel. It opens your phone's texting app with a message already drafted to your trial number.
  8. Select the button showing your trial phone number to copy it, then open your phone's texting app and paste it as the recipient.
  9. Enter any message body and send it from your phone.
  10. Twilio replies automatically, and your inbound message appears on the Logs tab of the panel.

Additional Information

  • Inbound messages must be sent from a phone number that is verified on your trial account.
  • To handle inbound messages with your own application instead of the standard reply, see "How do I send inbound SMS to my own webhook while testing?".
  • After you upgrade, this tab no longer shows a trial number. Instead it shows Receiving SMS on your Twilio phone number with a Numbers & senders link, where you configure how each of your own Twilio numbers handles inbound SMS.
