How do I make a test call with my Twilio trial account?

Objective

This article shows you how to place your first outbound call from the Twilio Console using the Voice tryout panel, and how to choose what Twilio says when the call connects.

Product

Programmable Voice

Environment

Twilio Console

Procedure

  1. In the Twilio Console, select Home in the left sidebar.
  2. Select the Voice product tab on your account home.
  3. Select Try out Voice. The Try out Voice panel opens with the tabs Start a call, Receive a call, and Logs, and shows how many free calls you have left.
  4. The Start a call tab is selected by default. Check that To shows the verified recipient you want to call. From is read-only on a trial account and shows the Twilio trial phone number assigned to that recipient.
  5. Choose what happens when the call connects:
  6. Leave Quick tests selected to place a call using a ready-made sample.
  7. Select Use cases, then pick a scenario from the Use cases list — for example Appointment Reminders.
  8. Select Start call.
  9. A Call initiated confirmation appears and the recipient's phone rings. The call then appears on the Logs tab with its status.

Additional Information

  • The call instructions are written in TwiML, which tells Twilio what to say and do when the call connects. Select Show TwiML Guide next to the instructions to switch the right-hand panel from API to TwiML Guide and read how it works.
  • The sample scenarios let you hear text-to-speech, speech recognition, and DTMF menu behaviour without writing any code. Speech-to-text and text-to-speech use AI and machine learning technologies, and your use of them is subject to Twilio's Predictive and Generative AI/ML Features Addendum.
  • You can also point the call at your own instructions instead of a sample by choosing the custom option and entering your own TwiML URL.
  • After you upgrade, To becomes a field you type into and From becomes a list of your own Twilio numbers.
  • When your free calls run out, the panel shows You've used all your free minutes with an Upgrade link, and calling is blocked until you upgrade.
  • If the call cannot be placed, an Error initiating call notification appears. Check that the recipient is still verified and that you have free minutes remaining.
