How do I control which countries I can send SMS messages to?

Objective

This article shows you how to use SMS geo permissions to choose the countries your account is allowed to send SMS messages to, which helps you limit spend and reduce exposure to unwanted international traffic.

Product

Programmable Messaging

Environment

Twilio Console

Procedure

  1. In the Twilio Console, select Communications in the left sidebar.
  2. Select Messaging, then Geo Permissions.
  3. The Geo permissions table lists countries grouped by region, with a Country, Country Code, and Status column. Expand a region to see the countries inside it.
  4. To find a specific destination, type a country name or country code into the search field. Matching regions expand automatically.
  5. Select the Status checkbox next to each country you want to enable, and clear the checkbox next to each country you want to disable. You can change as many countries as you need before saving.
  6. Select Save geo permissions.
  7. In the Update geo permissions? dialog, review the warning and select Update geo permissions.
  8. A confirmation message tells you that geo permissions were updated successfully.

Additional Information

  • Your changes take effect immediately. Any message sent to a country that does not have geo permissions enabled is blocked.
  • The Save geo permissions button stays inactive until you actually change a country's status. If you toggle a country and then toggle it back, the change is discarded and the button becomes inactive again.
  • A small number of countries cannot be enabled or disabled from this page; their checkboxes are unavailable and the table explains why.
