How do I set up reverse DNS for a dedicated IP address?

Objective

This article shows you how to create a reverse DNS (rDNS) record for one of your dedicated IP addresses. Reverse DNS maps the IP address back to a hostname on your domain, which mailbox providers check as a signal that the sending IP is legitimately yours.

Product

Twilio Email

Environment

Twilio Console

User Account Permission/Role(s) Required

You need a role with permission to view and manage email sender authentication. Without it, Domains does not appear under Email in the sidebar.

Procedure

  1. In the Twilio Console, select Communications in the left sidebar.
  2. Select Email, then Domains.
  3. Open the Reverse DNS tab and select Create rDNS record.
  4. Under Which IP address do you want to use?, optionally set Filter by Subaccount to narrow the choices, then pick an IP Address from your dedicated IP addresses.
  5. Under Which domain do you want to use?, enter your Domain.
  6. Optionally expand Advanced Settings and select Use a custom subdomain, then enter the Subdomain. Use letters or numbers only.
  7. Select Next. A confirmation message reads "Reverse DNS created successfully".
  8. On the Install DNS Records step, add the records shown to your DNS provider, then complete the wizard.

Additional Information

  • The Reverse DNS tab appears only when you are working in a parent account. It is not available while you are viewing a subaccount.
  • Reverse DNS applies to dedicated IP addresses. If you have not purchased any, the IP address list is empty and shows "No IP addresses found".
