How do I configure call handling for a SIP domain?

Objective

This article helps you tell Twilio what to do when a call arrives at your SIP domain — which handler answers it, which handler takes over if the first one fails, and where call status updates are sent.

Product

Programmable Voice

Environment

Twilio Console

User Account Permission/Role(s) Required

Your user must have permission to update Voice SIP trunk configuration on the account. Without it, the Edit configuration button is not shown.

Procedure

  1. In the Twilio Console, select Communications in the left sidebar.
  2. Select Voice, then SIP domains.
  3. Select the friendly name of the domain you want to change.
  4. In the Call control configuration section, select Edit configuration.
  5. In Edit call control configuration, choose a Configure method:
    1. Webhook: enter a Webhook URL and choose an HTTP method.
    2. TwiML bin: choose a TwiML bin.
    3. Function: choose a Function.
    4. Studio: choose a Studio flow.
    5. BYOC trunk: choose the trunk that should handle the call.
  6. Under Fallback call control configuration, choose a Backup method and complete its Webhook URL and HTTP method fields. The section notes "This configuration will be used if your primary handler fails."
  7. Under Status callback, enter a Webhook URL and choose an HTTP method. The section notes "Status Callback Webhooks allow you to receive HTTP events from related Phone Number updates."
  8. Select Save.
  9. A Configuration updated confirmation appears and the Call control configuration section shows the new values.

Additional Information

  • The fields shown change with the Configure method you pick, so only the settings that apply to that handler are asked for.
  • When you choose BYOC trunk, the Fallback call control configuration and Status callback sections are hidden. The trunk handles the call end to end. Switching back to another method restores both sections.
  • Webhook URL is required appears if you clear the primary webhook URL and try to save; the panel stays open until it is filled in.
  • Select Cancel, or the close (X) control, to discard your edits. Reopening the panel shows the last saved values.
