Objective
This article helps you point a TwiML App at the web application that handles your calls, add a fallback for when that handler fails, receive status callbacks, and set the app's caller name lookup and application dialing options.
Product
Programmable Voice
Environment
Twilio Console
User Account Permission/Role(s) Required
Your user needs permission to read TwiML Apps on the account. Without it, the console shows an access-required message instead of the settings form.
Procedure
- In the Twilio Console, select Builder tools in the left sidebar.
- Select TwiML host & config, then TwiML apps.
- Select the app you want to configure, then select the Voice tab.
- Under Primary call control configuration, enter the Request URL that points to your web application, and choose its HTTP method — HTTP GET or HTTP POST. The URL can be a webhook, a Function, or a TwiML bin URL.
- Under Fallback call control configuration, enter a Fallback URL and its HTTP method. This configuration is used if your primary handler fails.
- Under Status callback, enter a Status callback URL and its HTTP method to receive HTTP events from related phone number updates.
- Under Settings, choose:
- Caller name lookup — Enable or Disable. Enabling it adds a per-call charge.
- Allow Application Dialing from other Twilio Accounts — Allow or Don't allow.
- Select Save. A confirmation appears reading Voice settings updated successfully, and the fields keep the values you entered.
Additional Information
Each URL field must be a valid URL. A Fallback URL cannot be saved on its own: if you enter one without a Request URL, the form reports Fallback URL cannot be set without a Request URL. Please provide a Request URL first.
Both HTTP method fields default to HTTP POST.
A reserved application cannot be modified. On one of those, the page shows a Reserved application notice and the fields are unavailable.
Once you have a Request URL set, you can place a test call from the console without picking up a phone — see the article on making a test call with Twilio Client.
