Objective
This article explains how to turn on Voice Recording encryption so that future voice recordings on your account are encrypted with a public key you supply, and how to turn it off again.
Product
Programmable Voice
Environment
Twilio Console
User Account Permission/Role(s) Required
Your user role must allow reading and updating Voice recordings and Voice settings. Without update permission the fields are read-only and the Save action is not offered.
Procedure
- In the Twilio Console, select Communications in the left sidebar.
- Select Voice, then Recordings.
- Stay on the Settings tab and find the Voice Recording encryption section.
- Under Recording encryption, select Enable to encrypt future recordings, or Disable to leave them unencrypted.
- When you select Enable, a Select a public key field appears. Choose the public key that recordings should be encrypted with. If you do not have one stored yet, select Create new public key.
- Select Save.
- A confirmation appears reading "Encryption settings saved" with the message "Voice recording encryption settings have been successfully saved."
Additional Information
- Only enable encryption once you have built and tested decryption with your private key, or if the recordings on the account are test recordings. Recordings encrypted with a key whose private half you cannot use are not recoverable.
- Encryption applies to recordings made after you save. Recordings made before that are unaffected.
- A public key is required when encryption is enabled. Selecting Disable hides both the Select a public key field and the Create new public key action.
- If the save fails, a message reading "Failed to update encryption settings" appears with "There was an error updating the encryption settings. Please try again."
- To add a key, see "How do I create a public key for voice recording encryption?"
