How do I switch to the new Google Speech to Text APIs for <Gather>?

Objective

This article helps you move your speech recognition to Google's newer Speech to Text V2 APIs, so that <Gather><Speech> in your TwiML and the Gather widget in Studio use the updated engine.

Product

Programmable Voice

Environment

Twilio Console

User Account Permission/Role(s) Required

Read access to Voice settings is required to view the page. Update access to Voice settings is required to change the setting — without it the toggle is read-only.

Procedure

  1. In the Twilio Console, select Communications in the left sidebar.
  2. Select Voice, then Settings.
  3. On the General tab, Calls & Conferences is selected by default.
  4. Find the section headed Enable new Google Speech to Text (STT) V2 APIs for <Gather><Speech>.
  5. Switch on Enable Google speech to text.
  6. A confirmation message reads "Voice general settings have been updated successfully."

Additional Information

  • The change is saved as soon as you switch the toggle — there is no separate Save step.
  • Enabling this setting overrides your <Gather><Speech> TwiML and the Studio Gather widget so that both use the newer Google APIs for speech recognition.
  • Select Learn more in the section description for Twilio's <Gather> documentation.
  • Switch the toggle off again to return to the previous speech recognition behavior.
