How do I create an OAuth application for machine-to-machine access?

Objective

This article helps you register an OAuth application that uses the client credentials grant, so a backend service can obtain access tokens for your Twilio account without a person signing in.

Product

Twilio Console

Environment

Twilio Console

User Account Permission/Role(s) Required

An account role that allows you to create OAuth applications. Without it, the Create an OAuth app action is not shown.

Procedure

  1. In the Twilio Console, select Settings in the left sidebar.
  2. Under Account settings, select OAuth applications.
  3. Select Create an OAuth app. The Create an OAuth application wizard opens on the Application details step.
  4. Open the grant type selector and choose Client credentials.
  5. Enter an Application name and, optionally, an Application description.
  6. Select Next to move to the Access settings step.
  7. Set the token expiration using the Days, Hours, and Minutes fields. The default is 1 hour.
  8. Under Select OAuth Scopes, expand a product and select the permissions the application needs. You must select at least one.
  9. Select Next. The Credentials step shows the application's client identifier and client secret.
  10. Copy both values, select the checkbox confirming that you have saved your Client ID and Client secret, then select Finish. You are returned to the OAuth applications list.

Additional Information

  • The client secret is shown only once, on the Credentials step. Finish stays blocked until you confirm you have saved it, the form reports "Acknowledgement is required to continue".
  • Token expiration must be between 1 minute and 30 days. Values outside that range are rejected with "Token expiration time must be between 1 minute and 30 days".
  • Selecting Next with no permissions selected reports "You must select at least one permission".
  • Use the permissions search box to filter by product or resource; a term with no matches shows "No results found".
  • Stepping back and forward again in the wizard does not create a second application.
  • To leave without creating the application, select Cancel and then Close without saving.
