How do I create a custom authorization scope?

Objective

This article shows you how to define your own OAuth scopes so you control exactly what an AI agent can request access to on your users' behalf.

Product

Identity for AI Agents

Environment

Twilio Console

Procedure

  1. In the Twilio Console, select Identity & security in the left sidebar.
  2. Select Identity for AI Agents, then Custom Scopes.
  3. Select Create scope.
  4. In the Create scope window, fill in:
  5. Scope, the scope's identifier.
  6. Description, what this scope grants access to.
  7. Contains, optionally, other scopes that this scope implicitly grants. Pick them from the list of your existing scopes.
  8. Select Create.
  9. A confirmation appears and the new scope is listed in the table with its Scope, Description, and Contains values.
  10. Select a scope name in the table to open a panel showing its description and the full list of scopes it contains, each with its own description.

Additional Information

Scope names must use printable ASCII characters, with no spaces, double quotes, or backslashes, and can be up to 255 characters.

A description is required and can be up to 2,048 characters.

A scope cannot contain itself, so the scope you are editing never appears in its own Contains options.

Your custom scopes become selectable as Allowed scopes when you create or edit a client, so define the scopes you need before registering clients.
