How do I create a new identity rule?

Objective

This article helps you add a new identifier to a memory store, for example your own customer ID, so Conversation Memory can use it to match incoming data to the right customer profile.

Product

Conversation Memory

Environment

Twilio Console

User Account Permission/Role(s) Required

Your role must allow reading and updating Conversation Memory identity resolution settings.

Procedure

  1. In the Twilio Console, select Data in the left sidebar.
  2. Select Conversation Memory, then Memory stores.
  3. Select the store, then open the Identifiers tab.
  4. Select Add identifier. The Create a new identity rule wizard opens on the Rule definition step.
  5. Under Rule name, enter the name of the rule and set its limit.
  6. Under Trait mapping (optional), map one or more trait fields — for example email, customer_id, or phone — as the identifier for this rule. When incoming data includes those traits, their values are used as identifiers for the rule.
  7. Select Next to reach Priority ranking, then arrange the identity rules in the order you want them evaluated.
  8. Select Next to reach Summary, review the settings for the new rule, and select Create rule.

Additional Information

  • You can define an identity rule in two ways. A trait-based identifier reads its values from stored traits, as in step 6. An API-based identifier is a rule you create without trait mapping and then send identifier values to directly, use this when the identifier is not stored as a trait in your memory store.
  • New rules are added at the lowest priority by default. Generally an ID is more unique than a phone number or email address and should be given higher priority.
  • Each memory store has a limit on how many identifiers it can hold. If you have reached it, an Identifier limit reached message appears and tells you to delete an existing identifier first.
  • If you cancel partway through, a confirmation warns that your configuration has not been saved and you will lose your progress.
