Issue
This article addresses a scenario where inbound WhatsApp messages sent to a Twilio Conversations integration do not appear in Twilio logs and do not trigger webhooks, even though the messages are visible in the WhatsApp client. This can result in missed user communications and system responses.
Symptoms
- A user sends a WhatsApp message to a Twilio-integrated number.
- The message is visible in the WhatsApp client but does not appear in Twilio’s inbound message logs.
- No webhook is triggered for the missing message.
- Other messages in the same conversation are processed and logged as expected.

Environment

Cause
When Twilio receives an inbound WhatsApp message, it first creates a Programmable Messaging SID (e.g., SMXXXXXXXX or MMXXXXXXXX). This message is then mapped to a Conversations Classic message SID (IMXXXXXXXX). If the initial Programmable Messaging SID is not created, the message never reaches Twilio Conversations and cannot be processed or logged.
In the reported case, all messages except one ("Tak") were present in both the WhatsApp client and Twilio logs. The missing message had no corresponding SM/MM SID, indicating it was never received by Twilio. As a result, it was also absent from Conversations Classic logs and no webhook was triggered.
Resolution
-
Check Twilio Message Logs:
- Review inbound and outbound message logs for the affected time period.
- Confirm if the missing message has an
SMXXXXXXXXorMMXXXXXXXXSID.
-
Review Conversations Classic Logs:
- Check if the message appears in the Conversations Classic message logs (
IMXXXXXXXXSIDs).
- Check if the message appears in the Conversations Classic message logs (
-
Compare with WhatsApp Client:
- Identify any messages present in the WhatsApp client but missing from Twilio logs.
-
Confirm Webhook Activity:
- Verify if any webhook was triggered for the missing message.
Next Steps
- If a message is missing from both Programmable Messaging and Conversations logs, it was not received by Twilio.
- In such cases, Twilio Support will escalate the issue to the Messaging team for further investigation. The Messaging team may coordinate with Meta (WhatsApp) to determine why the message did not reach Twilio’s platform.
- There is no action that can be taken from the Conversations side if the message was not received by Twilio.
Additional Information
- Collect as many examples as possible, including timestamps, message content, and screenshots from the WhatsApp client.
- Provide these details to Twilio Support to assist with investigation and escalation.
- Monitor for patterns (e.g., specific languages, message types, or times) that may help identify the root cause.
