Why Is My Preferred Twilio SIP Domain Name Showing as Unavailable?

Question

How do I check the availability of a custom Twilio SIP domain if the console says it is unavailable, and can I claim a domain name if it is already taken?

Product

Programmable Voice

Environment

Twilio Console

Answer

Twilio SIP domains are globally unique across our entire platform and are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. When a domain name shows as "unavailable," it means another Twilio account has already claimed it.

If your company manages multiple Twilio accounts or subaccounts, check if someone on your team previously registered the domain. If the domain belongs to an account under your direct business control, Twilio Support can help release it so you can reuse it.

Otherwise, the best solution is to use a variation of your preferred name. You can test the availability of alternative names by adding words or location indicators, such as:

  • <domainname>-voice.sip.twilio.com
  • <domainname>-comms.sip.twilio.com
  • <domainname>-us.sip.twilio.com
