Email Delivery Error: "Make Domain EU-Pinned" When Authenticating in SendGrid

Issue

When authenticating a domain in SendGrid, you may see an option labeled "Make domain EU-pinned." This setting is designed for accounts that are subusers in the European Union (EU) region. It ensures that your domain authentication and email sending are handled within the EU data region for compliance and data residency requirements.

  • Your domain shows as authenticated in SendGrid.
  • However, emails sent from this domain are not delivered to recipients’ inboxes (they may be rejected or not appear at all).

Cause

  1. The "Make domain EU-pinned" option was selected during authentication, but this is your parent account and not an EU subuser.
  2. This configuration is not supported for parent accounts and can prevent emails from being not delivered to recipients’ inboxes.

Resolution

To resolve this issue:

  • Remove the Current Domain Authentication:
    • In your SendGrid dashboard, delete the domain authentication that was set up with "Make domain EU-pinned" enabled.
  • Re-authenticate the Domain:
    • Start the domain authentication process again.
    • Do not select the "Make domain EU-pinned" option unless your account is an EU subuser.
    • Complete the authentication steps as prompted.
  • Verify DNS Records:
    • Ensure all required DNS records (CNAME, DKIM, SPF) are correctly added and propagated.

When Should You Use "Make domain EU-pinned?

  • Use this option only if:
    • Your account is a subuser specifically created in the EU region and you require your data to remain within the EU for compliance reasons.
  • Do not use this option if:
    • You are using a parent account or a non-EU subuser account.
