Issue
Some users may encounter a “Get a Number” prompt when using the ‘Try it out’ feature in the Twilio Console, even though they already have an active Twilio number enabled for Voice and SMS. This article explains why this happens and how to proceed.
Symptoms
- You have an active Twilio number (enabled for Voice and/or SMS).
- When accessing the ‘Try it out’ feature in the Twilio Console, you are prompted with “Get a Number.”
- Your number appears under “Active Numbers” in the Console.
- The issue persists across different browsers and sessions.

Environment
Twilio Console
Cause
This behavior is typically a user interface (UI) quirk in the Twilio Console. The ‘Get a Number’ prompt may appear even if you already have a number, especially if the UI does not immediately recognize your existing number.
Resolution
You can proceed with the ‘Try it out’ flow by clicking the next box or step, even if it appears greyed out. The box is still clickable and will allow you to continue with the process.
Example:
- Before clicking: The next step appears greyed out. You need to click on the grey box.
- After clicking: The flow continues as expected.
If you are unable to proceed, try the following:
- Refresh the page.
- Use Incognito/Private mode to rule out browser cache or extension issues.
- Try a different browser.
