Registering Your Alphanumeric Sender ID for Australia in the Twilio Console

Objective

Starting July 1, 2026 all Alphanumeric Sender IDs used for SMS in Australia need to be registered on the ACMA Sender ID Register (ACMA Assist). This guide walks you through the registration process right from Twilio Console.

Important: Any sender IDs that aren’t registered by July 1, 2026, will be modified to display as “Unverified” to message recipients.

If you're a Direct Customer who intends to use the new sender ID for messaging related to your own products or services, then the guidance and information requirements apply directly to you and your use case.

If you’re an Independent Software Vendor (ISV) registering sender IDs on behalf of your customers, this guide applies to you too, and you’re responsible for gathering the required information from your end users to submit registrations.

Procedure

What you’ll need to get started

Before starting, make sure you have the following information ready:

  • Business Proof: An up-to-date commercial registration extract (e.g., ASIC company extract) showing the business name, address, registration number, and officers. Accepted formats: JPG, PNG, PDF  (max 5 MB).
  • Sender ID Proof: Evidence connecting your brand to the requested sender ID, such as a trademark certificate or domain registration.
  • ID Verification: You'll need a government-issued ID (e.g., Driver's License, Passport) for either a company officer or an authorized representative. A signed LOA from the officer if the ID is not of the officer. You can find the LOA template at the bottom of the article here.

Refer here for detailed information on the preparation of documentation for your application.

Registration Steps

Bulk registration of multiple Sender IDs at once is not supported. Each Sender ID must be registered one at a time. Ensure you are registering the Alphanumeric Sender ID in the parent account or subaccount that will use the Alphanumeric Sender ID.

1. Start a new registration

In Twilio Console, navigate to Phone Numbers -> Alphanumeric Sender ID. Select the Australia registration form to begin.

2. Define your sender ID

  • Requested sender ID: Enter a sender ID between 2–11 characters following the guidelines for sender IDs in Australia.
  • Global HQ country: Select the country where your company’s global headquarters is located. For example, an Australian-based business would select Australia. For a U.S.-based business operating in Australia, select the United States.
  • Message details: Identify whether your messages are Transactional or Promotional.

3. Enter your company and business information

  • Entity type: Select whether you’re a Direct Customer or an Independent Software Vendor (ISV)/Reseller.
  • Business details: Select an existing customer profile or create a new customer profile to provide your business information. Customer profiles can be created through the console or via API. Learn more about creating customer profiles here.

ISV note: If you’re an ISV and registering a sender ID for your own use, select a Primary Customer Profile. If you’re registering on behalf of one of your end customers, use a Secondary Customer Profile.

4. ISV registration model

This step only applies to ISVs. Direct customers can skip to Step 5.

As an ISV, you need to choose your registration model to proceed:

  • Option A - Partner with Twilio: Twilio acts as your Certified Telecommunication Provider and submits sender ID registration applications to the ACMA sender ID Register on behalf of your end users.
  • Option B - Manage Registration Independently: You have arranged or will arrange registration independently with ACMA. Twilio won't submit sender ID registration applications for your end users.

If you choose option B, you're responsible for registering your customers' sender IDs directly with ACMA. Any sender IDs that aren't registered by July 1, 2026, will be modified to "Unverified".

5. Provide sender ID details

  • Traffic volume: Enter your estimated monthly sender ID traffic.
  • Use case description: Provide a clear description of the use case (max 1,000 characters).
  • Sample message: Provide a representative sample SMS message (max 160 characters).

6. Upload proof of Sender ID

Provide evidence connecting your sender ID to your business or brand.

Note for non-Australian businesses: You'll need to upload a trademark certificate, domain registration certificate or an equivalent documentation if your sender ID doesn’t match the business name on your company extract.

7. Verify your Authorized Representative information

There are two ways to verify your identity to register the sender ID:

  • Officer ID: Upload or capture a photo of a company officer's government ID
  • Authorized Rep + LOA: Upload your own government-issued ID and a Letter of Authorization (LOA) signed by a listed company officer.

8. Upload business documentation

  • Proof of Business: Upload your company extract (JPG, PNG, PDF; max 5MB).
  • LOA (if applicable): If the person providing the government ID is not of the officer listed in the company extract or document of incorporation, upload a signed LOA. You can find the LOA template at the bottom of the article here.
  • Trademark certificate (if applicable): Non-Australia based businesses must provide a trademark certificate or domain registration certificate or an equivalent if the sender ID does not match the business name on the company extract.

9. Set notification preferences

Provide an email address and/or status callback webhook where you would like to receive status updates of your registration.

10. Identity verification

Follow on screen instructions to verify your government ID.

 11. Review and Submission

Double-check all the details in your application to make sure everything is accurate. Once you’re ready, click “Submit Registration”.

Additional Information

What happens next?

  1. Twilio review: Twilio will review your application. If some information is missing or needs correction, Twilio will reject your application and provide details of the corrections via the notification method you provided in your application.
If your registration is related to your use of Twilio Verify/Authy, Twilio may contact you for additional information related to your SMS OTP traffic to Australia.
  2. ACMA review: If approved by Twilio, the request is sent to ACMA.
  3. Notification: You'll receive updates in each step. You'll receive the final approval or rejection notice via email and/or status callback URL within approximately 2 weeks from the moment the registration is submitted to ACMA.

Status updates

You'll receive any change to your registration status to your preferred notification method via email and/or status callback URLs.

You’ll also be able to see the status of your application at all times on Console. All your registrations submitted for Australia are available under the tab “Australia registrations” under Phone Numbers -> Alphanumeric Sender IDs.

Your registrations will be in one of these following statuses:

  • In Draft: Registration is started, but not submitted yet. You can continue where you left off previously from this status.
  • In Review: Twilio review for missing or incorrect information and ACMA review. You won’t be able to edit your information when in this status.
  • Rejected: Action required; you must use the "resubmit application" action to fix inconsistencies and resubmit.
  • Approved: Final status. The sender ID is approved and registered to the account.

Rejection and resubmissions

If the Twilio sender ID specialist identifies any gaps or inconsistencies in your application that could generate a rejection by ACMA, you’ll receive an email with detailed feedback.

When you navigate to Phone Numbers > Alphanumeric Sender IDs and check the status of your application in the “Australia Registrations" tab, its status will be “Rejected”.

Use the “Resubmit application” action to address the identified issues and re-submit your application for review. When you click “resubmit application”, you will see the identified issues that need to be corrected. Don’t worry, your previously submitted information will be available. You’re only required to correct the issues and resubmit the application.
