How to Use a Studio Flow or TwiML App for Inbound Calls to My Australian (AU1) Twilio Number

Objective

If you have an Australian local phone number in Twilio and are trying to set up inbound call routing, you may notice that only the “Webhook” option is available when your number is set to the Australia (AU1) region. Options like Studio Flow and TwiML App may not appear. This article explains why this happens, what your options are, and how to work around the limitation.

When you configure an Australian phone number in the Twilio Console and set its region to Australia (AU1), the Console currently only allows you to use a Webhook for inbound call routing. The options to select a Studio Flow or a TwiML App are not available for AU1 region numbers at this time.

This is a known product limitation and is documented in Twilio’s Regional Product and Feature Availability.

Procedure

Why Does This Limitation Exist?

Twilio is expanding regional support for features to help customers comply with data residency and optimize call quality. However, not all features are available in every region yet. For AU1, Studio Flow and TwiML App routing for inbound calls are not yet supported in the Twilio Console.

What Are My Options?

  1. Use a Webhook:
You can continue to use a Webhook for inbound call routing in the AU1 region. This allows you to point to your own application endpoint to handle calls.

  2. Workaround: Switch to US1 Region
If you need to use Studio Flow or a TwiML App, you can temporarily set your phone number’s region back to the default (US1) in the Console. This will enable the Studio Flow and TwiML App options for inbound routing.
Note: Changing the region to US1 may affect call media and signaling routing, which could increase latency for calls within Australia.

  3. Feature Request:
Twilio is aware of this limitation and is working to expand support. If this feature is important to your business, let Twilio know by submitting feedback through the Console or your account team.

How to Change Your Number’s Region

  1. Go to the Active Phone Numbers section (US1) of the Twilio Console.
  2. Select your Australian number.
  3. Change the region from AU1 to US1 by clicking on Re-route.
  4. Save your changes.
  5. You should now see Studio Flow and TwiML App as options for inbound call routing.

Additional Information

Currently, Studio Flow and TwiML App routing are not available for AU1 region numbers in the Twilio Console. You can use a Webhook or temporarily switch your number to the US1 region as a workaround, but be aware of potential latency impacts. Twilio is working to expand feature support in all regions.

Important details:

  • Latency: Calls routed through US1 may experience higher latency for Australian callers.
  • Compliance: If you have data residency requirements, check if routing through US1 meets your needs.
