Reinstalling Authy or Moving to a New Device

Objective

When reinstalling Authy or moving to a new phone, restoring access to your 2FA tokens depends entirely on your current Authy account setup. This guide covers the main scenarios you will encounter when registering your app:

  • Registering Authy with access to an existing Authy registered device.
  • Registering Authy without access to an existing Authy registered device.

An Authy reinstallation is considered a new registration, even if the same device is used, there's no way to recover an installation from cloud backups for example.

⚠️ Important Registration Notes: Before switching to a new device or reinstalling Authy, ensure that both Multi-Device and Backups are enabled, and that you know your current backup password. Failing to verify these settings beforehand puts you at risk of permanently losing access to your stored 2FA tokens. Find more at What is a Backup Password? Can it be recovered?

Procedure

Reinstalling or Registering Authy with Access to an Existing Authy Installation.

If you need to reinstall Authy and you have access to an existing Authy installation, make sure to enable Multi-Device, and make sure to know your Backups Password.

  1. Tap the gear icon in Authy to access the Settings page.
  2. Go to Devices > Allow multi-device
  3. Make sure to know your backups password before the next step
  4. Install or Reinstall Authy and allow the new registration with SMS or Using the existing device.

Reinstalling Registering Authy without Access to an Existing Authy Installation

If you reinstall Authy, but don't have access to another Authy app installation and Multi-Device is disabled, you will need to recover your account. Start the Account Recovery Process by going to our Account Recovery page.

⚠️ Notice: This process takes 24 hours; it cannot be rushed due to security protocols. If backups are not enabled, or you lost or forgot the backups password you will lose your 2FA tokens, the account recovery process does not reset the backups password.

Registering Authy with a New Phone Number

If you need to update both your device AND phone number, a different set of processes will apply. For more information, please see Phone Number Change Process for Authy.

Note: If you have forgotten your old phone number, and/or lost access to the email address you registered with, please contact Twilio Support.
